Cedar Maintenance in Albert Town
Albert Town cedar lives two lives: baked on the sunny faces, damp and shaded near the rivers and trees. We look after both, including the timber repairs that coating alone cannot fix.
Sun on one side, damp on the other
Albert Town sits on the terraces where the Clutha and Hawea rivers meet, with more established trees and shelter than newer parts of Wanaka. That changes what cedar does here. North and west faces fade and dry out in the Central Otago sun like anywhere else, but shaded and sheltered walls hold moisture, and that is where mould and soft, damaged timber turn up.
It means an Albert Town cedar job is often two different jobs on one house. Reading each elevation for what it actually needs, rather than treating the whole place the same, is most of the skill.
Repair before coating
Brad has been staining and restoring cedar around Wanaka and Albert Town for over 15 years. The job below is a recent Albert Town project where the fascia had gone past the point a coating could save: peeling, with damaged timber underneath. We stripped it, repaired the timber, then rebuilt the finish across the cladding with penetrating oil.
Coating over damage buries a problem you will meet again in two years. Fixing it first is slower and it is the only version of the job we are interested in doing.
Timber repair included
Fascia, trims and damaged boards repaired and made good before any coating goes on.
Elevation by elevation
Sunny faces and damp shaded walls get treated as the different problems they are.
Mould treated properly
Killed at the spore, not rinsed off to come straight back.
Penetrating oils only
Systems that soak in and weather gracefully in Central Otago UV. Nothing that peels.

Albert Town cedar questions
How often does cedar need doing in Albert Town?
Much the same as Wanaka proper: every 2 to 3 years on the sunny elevations, 3 to 4 on sheltered sides. The bigger factor in Albert Town is shade and damp. Homes near the rivers or tucked behind established trees hold moisture longer, which means mould gets going where the sun does not reach.
What condition problems do you see most in Albert Town?
A mix. Sunny faces fade and dry out like anywhere in Central Otago, but we also see more moisture-related work here: mould on shaded walls, and timber damage on fascia and exposed trims that has gone past coating and needs repair first. The Albert Town job below had exactly that.
Can you repair damaged boards and fascia, or just coat them?
Repair first, coat second. Stripping back peeling fascia, repairing damaged timber and making good before anything goes on is normal scope for us, not an extra trade you have to find.
Do you do smaller jobs, or only whole houses?
Both. A single weathered elevation, a fascia repair, or an entry that cops the afternoon sun are all worth doing properly. Catching one bad wall early often saves the rest of the house from being dragged along to a restoration later.
What does cedar work in Albert Town cost?
A maintenance oil refresh on a typical home usually lands between $2,000 and $4,500 including GST depending on size, access and condition. Restorations with sanding and repair are more, usually upwards of $5,000. Quotes are free, off your actual house.
